Valerian: What is it ?

Valerian is a perennial plant native to North America and Europe. Valerian has pinkish coloured flowers that grow from a tuberous rootstock (rhizome). When the plant is 2 years old the rootstock is harvested.
Valerian is officially approved as a sleep aid by
medical authorities in the UK, Germany and other EU countries

Valerian has been taken for centuries to promote a good nights sleep. Rather than induce sleep directly valerian calms the brain and body so sleep can occur naturally, so you don't feel groggy in the morning. Valerian has been shown to help people achieve sleep more quickly and to awaken less often during sleep.

Valerian is non-addictive and does not leave you feeling drugged, unlike Valium and Xanax.

Always ensure that you buy Valerian as a standardized extract as this is far more potent.

Side Effects and Drug Interactions:

There are no dangerous side-effects at the recommended dosage or even at much higher dosages.

It is safe to take Valerian alongside other herbs such as St. John's Wort if you are depressed or Kava if you are suffering from anxiety.

Benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax often cause grogginess the morning after which can impair your ability to drive or perform tasks that require concentration. Valerian has neither of these unwelcome and potentially dangerous side effects.
