St John's Wort: What is it ?

St John's Wort is a shrubby perennial with bright yellow flowers. St John's Wort is grown all over the world. It is named after St John the Baptist because it flowers around the day celebrated as his birthday, the 24th of June.

St Johns Wort has been used as a herbal remedy for many centuries. Scientists believe St Johns Wort can improve mood and emotions by enhancing brain levels of at least four neurotransmitters, including serotonin.

In Germany where herbal remedies are routinely prescribed, St Johns Wort is the most common form of antidepressant used, as it has far fewer side effects than conventional antidepressants.
