Omega-3: What is it ?
Omega-3 is a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid found in high levels in some species of fish. Fish obtain them from the plankton they eat. Generally the colder the water the higher the levels of Omega-3 in the planktons, and therefore the higher the Omega-3 within the fish. The two most potent forms of Omega-3 are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic aicd). These are found in abundance in cold water fish. The third type of Omega-3 is ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) which is found in some vegetable oils such as flaxseed oil. However ALA may not be as effective as EPA and DHA.
