Feverfew: What is it ?

Feverfew comes from the same family of flowers as daisies and sunflowers. It closely resembles chamomile. It is the leaves of the feverfew plant which are used medicinally.
One UK study showed found that 50% of the feverfew
preparations it compared contained virtually none
of the active ingredient, parthenolide.

Always ensure that you buy Feverfew as a standardized extract as this guarantees potency.

Feverfew: Main Benefits

The active ingredient in feverfew is parthenolide. This compound helps control the dilation and constriction of blood vessels in the brain.

Some doctors think migraines occur when the blood vessels in the brain constrict and then rapidly dilate. This rapid change causes the release of chemicals that cause pain and inflammation. It is thought that feverfew prevents the rapid dilation of the blood vessels and therefore inhibits the release of these chemicals.

Feverfew must be taken over a long period and acts to reduce the frequency and ferocity of migraine attacks. It must be taken long term and used as a preventative. Simply popping a feverfew tablet when a migraine occurs will not relieve the migraine. Most migraine sufferers notice a decrease in migraine attacks after taking feverfew each morning for 2 or more months.

Many studies have been carried out that confirm the benefit of feverfew for migraine sufferers. Health authorities in many countries including Canada approve the use of feverfew for migraine prevention.

Feverfew: Lesser-Known Benefits

Feverfew has also been taken to treat menstrual cramps. It seems to inhibit the production of excess prostaglandins, which cause the pain and inflammation.
